If you're looking for the perfect Lake Tahoe summer road trip from the Bay Area, to plan your own Tahoe adventure, this itinerary combines scenic hikes, turquoise-blue beaches, mountain adventures, golf, and unforgettable High Sierra views.
Over five days, we explored some of Tahoe's most beautiful destinations, staying at Kirkwood, Heavenly, and Northstar along the way. From alpine lakes and hidden coves to mountain coasters and historic train tunnels, every day brought a new adventure.
Here's exactly how our trip unfolded.
Day 1: Bay Area to Kirkwood and Meiss Meadows
Our journey began with a scenic drive from the Bay Area over Carson Pass and into Kirkwood Mountain Resort, where we checked into our condo and settled in for the first leg of our Lake Tahoe summer road trip.
Once we were unpacked, we headed out for a short drive to one of the area's hidden gems: Meiss Meadows. The hike was the perfect introduction to the High Sierra, winding through peaceful forests, colorful wildflower displays, and wide-open mountain vistas. This out-and-back hike is 6 miles, with the option to extend and check out one of the high-alpine lakes in the area, Showers Lake or Round Lake.
The trail offered a chance to slow down and soak in the scenery, setting the tone for what would become an unforgettable week in Tahoe.
Day 2: Lake Winnemucca and Heavenly Adventures
Day two started with what can only be described as an 11-out-of-10 hike to Lake Winnemucca.
The trail meanders through high-elevation forests, crosses gentle streams, and gradually opens up to reveal one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the region. Once we arrived, it was impossible not to linger. On a warm summer day, the crystal-clear water, surrounding peaks, and peaceful atmosphere create the kind of place you never want to leave.
If you're planning this hike, bring a snack or even a picnic and give yourself time to enjoy the lakeshore. The hike is 5 miles out and back, plus you have the choice to detour to Frog Lake or extend to Round Top Lake or Fourth of July Lake.
After our hike, we headed about 35 miles to South Lake Tahoe and Heavenly to check into Zalanta, an ideal home base located directly across from the Heavenly Gondola.
That convenience came in handy because our afternoon was packed with mountain fun. We rode the gondola up the mountain before taking on the mountain coaster and zipline experiences. The combination of adrenaline and panoramic Lake Tahoe views made for an incredible afternoon, and the perfect start to our Lake Tahoe road trip itinerary.
Day 3: Secret Cove, Chimney Beach, and Northstar
After checking out of Zalanta, we began the drive north along Tahoe's Nevada shoreline.
Our first stop was Secret Cove, a short 35 minute drive from Heavenly, famous for the vibrant turquoise-blue water that has helped make Lake Tahoe a world-famous destination. The colors here almost don't seem real until you're standing on the shoreline seeing them for yourself.
From Secret Cove, we continued north on foot to Chimney Beach. This beautiful stretch of shoreline made a perfect place to relax, enjoy a snack, and take in even more incredible lake views before returning to the road.
Later that day, we arrived at Northstar and checked into our condo. To cap off the afternoon, we enjoyed a fantastic round of golf surrounded by mountain scenery.
Day 4: Hiking and Exploring Northstar
Day four was dedicated to exploring Northstar's summer offerings.
Armed with summer lift tickets, we headed up the mountain for high-elevation hiking and incredible views. One of the highlights was the 2 mile, out-and-back hike to Sawmill Lake, a peaceful alpine destination tucked away among the forested slopes.
Throughout the day, we enjoyed watching mountain bikers flying down trails across the mountain. Before this trip, I had no idea just how legendary Northstar's mountain biking scene was. If you're a mountain biking enthusiast, this place belongs on your bucket list.
The evening provided a slower pace, with dinner in the village, a few rounds of cornhole, and a relaxing end to the day around the fire.
Day 5: Donner Train Tunnels and the Journey Home
Every great summer road trip has to come to an end, but our final day delivered one last memorable adventure.
Before heading home, we made a stop at the historic Donner Train Tunnels. The abandoned tunnels offer a fascinating glimpse into California's railroad history, complete with colorful tunnel art, dramatic stonework, and a slightly eerie atmosphere.
Is it a little creepy? Absolutely.
Is it worth visiting? Also absolutely.
After exploring the tunnels, we began the drive home, wrapping up five incredible days around Lake Tahoe.
