Family vacations at Northstar, California

Finding your home base is the first step in having a comfortable and hassle-free family vacation. Our private homes and condos are ideal for traveling with kids, offering game rooms, laundry and other family-friendly amenities. The free dial-a-ride shuttle service to and from the Village makes coming and going a breeze.

Minors' Camp is the only resort-licensed childcare facility on Lake Tahoe's North Shore and a great option for families traveling with 2 to 6-year-olds. It is located near the Village, with free parking and shuttle service for parents.

If it’s been a while since your family has put on ski boots (or if it’s the first time), a Private Family Lesson can help make your time on the mountain together memorable, safe and fun. Our expert instructors customize the lessons to serve families with varied riding abilities—making the time valuable for all.

For the little ones (ages 3 and up), our Kids Ski and Snowboard School is the perfect way to build confidence and comfort on the hill. To help better plan your day in Ski School, here is one family’s story of skiing together for the first time.

Northstar’s terrain is perfect families with blossoming skiing and riding abilities. Once you’ve brushed up on your skills with a lesson, spend a day lapping the gated off Family Learning Zone, entry-level features in the Burton Progression Park or the new Kids Adventure Zones.

With 75 percent beginner and intermediate trails, Northstar is perfect for a fun and safe family skiing adventure. Here is a Northstar family’s story on which runs they like most for families.

Explore all of the family fun the Village has to offer. Put on a pair of ice skates and glide to live music on the Village stage, or bring your kids to the Overlook for climbing and sliding in the Snow Play Zone, or even jumping on the bungee trampoline. With S’more Time daily at 4 p.m., face painting and balloon twisting on select evenings, the Village will keep your family entertained off the slopes.

If skiing isn't for you, just refresh and recharge with some of our more low-key family activities. Make a candle or paint pottery at the Village Candle Shop, or catch a movie at the Village Cinemas. Snow Tubing at mid-mountain is sure to provide a thrill for the whole family, and regularly scheduled Family and Twilight Snowshoe Tours are great for exploring the Sierras together. You can also give cross-country skiing, on our mildly sloping trails amidst stunning views of Lake Tahoe.

Before heading up the mountain, grab an organic breakfast burrito from Copper Lane Café or an egg scramble from inxpot. If you have kids in ski school, you can even get a sneak peak of their lesson while sipping coffee on the inxpot patio.

With five  on-mountain dining locations offering everything from brisket to pizza, and Asian noodle bowls to ahi tuna tacos, there are plenty of family-friendly options. TC’s Pub is the perfect place to unwind at the end of the day, where kids will definitely appreciate the list of gourmet milkshake options. If dining in sounds more like your family’s style, pick up everything you need for a home cooked meal at Copper Lane Provisions.

So you’re looking for a winter getaway with a group and have many options to weigh ... What will make everyone happy? Is there really one location that will have it all? Will there be enough to keep everyone busy, yet relaxed? Can I still stick to my health routine? The answers are yes and here is your itinerary:

First comes lodging. You want to be in the heart of it all with restaurants, shopping and—of course—the slopes. Check out our various lodging options in the Village, which offer great views, effortless planning and underground parking.

Next up is Burton Academy. Perhaps you've tried snowboarding before, but this time you want to walk away feeling accomplished. The Burton Academy at Northstar is the only place in the world that trains under a propriety "terrain-based" teaching approach. And best of all, the experience comes with some pretty hip gear.

If you already consider yourself an expert skier, we challenge you to shred them at a Platinum level.

And for the friends who aren’t into competing with you, our Cross-Country Center offers snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and fat tire biking for some alternative fun. Try one or all three energizing sports and then relax by the fire pits overlooking mid-mountain with some complimentary hot cocoa.

Once the clock hits 4 p.m., your FitBit is probably telling you that you deserve a good meal and cocktail. Head down to the Village for a relaxing glass of wine at Petra while enjoying our nightly live music on the Village stage. And then head over for an unforgettable meal at Yamakai Fish & Sushi Co. Don’t like fish or sushi? No problem, Yamakai’s menu has all sorts of other great options.

Insider's Tip: We recommend Tahoe Yoga & Wellness as a kick-off to day two, after working potentially harder than originally intended on day one. We offer yoga, massages, wellness treatments and more.
