Burton's Terrain Based Teaching Area

Ripperoo Riglet Park

The Ripperoo Riglet Park, named for the Burton Riglet Reel, is a specialty terrain-based learning area designed specifically for the youngest snowboarders in Northstar California’s Burton Academy. Children as young as three years old, and potty-trained, enter the park with a Burton Academy instructor to experience snowboarding over miniature features. These purpose-built features include various snow formations and man-made structures designed for tiny riders to feel comfortable on a snowboard at a quicker pace, accelerating progression. This is done by naturally controlling a child’s speed when first learning to snowboard.

Burton Riglet FAQ's

In 2010 Burton released the Burton Riglet Reel and it changed the game for kids snowboarding. By creating a tool that allows parents to tow kids around on a snowboard, children as young as two and three are finding success with snowboarding. Designed to attach to the nose of a child’s snowboard, the Riglet Reel uses a retractable cord with ergonomic handle for towing.
No, while the Burton Academy is unique to Northstar California, the Ripperoo Riglet Park can be found at Northstar and Keystone Mountain Resort.

On-Mountain Family Learning Zones

Whether the whole family is skiing and riding together or taking individual lessons, the Northstar Kids Adventure Zones are designed to encourage learning. The family-friendly areas are located near Luggi’s and Deerskin trails, both blue square terrain, with slopes flowing to interactive structures fostering on-mountain play while perfecting form. The features are a mix of natural and man-made structures coinciding with two themes: Wagon Wheel, an homage to the region’s history, and Skicology, focusing on the natural environment.
