The Northstar Habitat Management Plan

Environmental Leadership

The Northstar Habitat Management Plan is the result of collaboration among several stakeholders. The document is reviewed annually by Northstar staff and a summary memo is provided to Sierra Watch and Mountain Area Preservation Foundation outlining management practices. The plan will be reviewed and updated every five years by the stakeholders.

Sierra Watch

Sierra WatchSierra Watch provides strategic leadership to targeted conservation campaigns, securing permanent protection of threatened Sierra landscapes. In 10 years, the Nevada City-based organization has demonstrated unprecedented success in Martis Valley, on Donner Summit, and beyond.

"Our agreements with Northstar provide a great example of how landowners, developers, and conservationists can work together," says Tom Mooers, Executive Director of Sierra Watch. "Together, we've protected thousands of acres of priority conservation land and ensured a healthy Martis Valley for generations to come."

Mountain Area Preservation

Mountain Area Preservation FoundationMountain Area Preservation advocates for sound land use planning, open space and smart growth in the Truckee region. Their work has helped protect natural resources and preserve open space in Martis Valley, Donner Summit, Coldstream Canyon and Negro Canyon for the last 25 years.

"Mountain Area Preservation's ability to protect natural resources is normally limited to the time that a project is being evaluated, and stops when it is approved," explains John Eaton, former president of Mountain Area Preservation. "With this Habitat Management Plan, which we negotiated at the time the Northstar development was approved, protection will adapt to new circumstances and will continue into the indefinite future. We are fortunate in working with business partners, as well as conservation partners, who are dedicated to making this process work for the benefit of the environment."
