The Northstar Mountain Master Plan

How the community can see it in action.

There have been, and will continue to be, many results of the two-year process in creating the Northstar Habitat Management Plan by Northstar, Sierra Watch and Mountain Area Preservation Foundation.

Most recently, there was a third-party review of the Northstar Habitat Management Plan for consistency with Northstar's Mountain Master Plan before it was entered into the Placer County approval process in 2012. Both Sierra Watch and Mountain Area Preservation Foundation signed off on Northstar's consistency letter to the county. The Northstar Mountain Master Plan outlines the mountain improvements the resort proposes to make on its land for the foreseeable future. It proposes upgrades to the existing ski terrain as well as the creation of additional ski pods on the western slopes of Mt. Pluto, the northeastern slopes of Sawtooth Ridge, and on Lookout Mountain.

"The Northstar Mountain Master Plan (right) illustrates an exciting next step in our vision for the future of Northstar guided largely by the principles and management strategies established in the Habitat Management Plan, which was the result of our ongoing partnerships within the environmental community," said Bill Rock, chief operating officer of Northstar California Resort.

With the Northstar Habitat Management Plan in place, the Northstar Mountain Master Plan was updated, utilizing the Zones and habitat mapping as a blueprint, with the intent of minimizing and/or avoiding adverse environmental effects.

A component of the proposed Northstar Mountain Master Plan is the dedication of land in the northwestern section of the resort bordering Sawtooth Ridge and the Martis Valley, making it a protected conservation area.

This conservation area (right) will be managed using the Northstar Habitat Management Plan guidelines to conserve and enhance the natural resource values.

Implementation of the Northstar Habitat Management Plan includes:

  1. Areas managed primarily for conservation secured through conservation easement/s over specific areas that lie outside resort infill areas.
  2. Forest health enhancement measures that have been and will continue to be implemented as part of the Northstar Mountain Master Plan.
  3. Additional measures, as appropriate, to mitigate EIR identified impacts to biological resources.
