National Safety Awareness Month

Northstar California as part of the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA), hosts National Safety Awareness Month. Throughout the month of January, come learn all about the safety initiatives we use all-season long to keep our guests and employees safe. All of the activities listed below are free. To participate in the on-mountain activities you will just need a lift ticket or season pass.


All Month Long

  • Poster Contest - Kids Ski and Snowboard School and will offer the annual NSAA Safety Poster Contest where one lucky poster will be sent to be entered in the National Contest.
  • Patrol Dog Demos - Jack and Ruckus will show off their skills with on the snow demonstrations. Schedule to come.


  • Safe Tracks (Open With a Patroller) - Have you ever been waiting eagerly in a lift line, dreaming of making first tracks on fresh corduroy and wishing that you could switch careers for a day just to get those early runs with Patrol? Well…. here’s your chance! Offered Select Fridays - January 10, 17, 24, and 31. Please e-mail Luke Ryan, Ski Patrol Supervisor by 3 p.m. the Thursday before to sign up. Limited space available, open to the first ten. Must be at Intermediate skiing ability.


  • Bars Down for Bars - Lift Operations will be handing out candy bars to guests who are caught with the comfort bar down on Saturdays in January.
  • Grooming Q+A - Grooming will have a grooming snow cat by Zephyr Lodge and with an operator present to explain the grooming process and why we groom to keep the mountain safe. Guests will be able to get on the cat to check it out and get photos. Epic Mix photo will also be available to take guests' photos. Saturdays in January: 4, 11, 18, & 25, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.


  • Patrol Paws Pin - earn your Patrol Paws Pin every Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. at the trail map at the Summit.

Fridays - Sundays

  • Ski Safe with a Patroller - Guests should meet at 11 a.m. at the Summit Patrol Bump every Friday-Sunday (weather dependent).

January 24 - 26

  • Safety Scavenger Hunt + Raffle - National Ski Patrol will hold a daily scavenger hunt and raffle Saturday and Sunday, January 25 - 26. Guests can sign up at the top of the Big Springs Express Gondola or in Arrow Maze by the National Ski Patrol Subaru. All guests who participate in the scavenger hunt will be entered to win fun prizes! Drawing for prizes will be held daily at 3 p.m. Must be present to win.
